Growing tips

Soil

Shallots ideally require light, well-drained soils. If the soil in your garden is clay, mound the soil into gentle ridges before planting the shallots. This will ensure more effective drainage.

Planting

Choose a spot in your garden where you have not grown Allium for at least three years.

When planting, gently press the bulbs into the soil to about a third of their height, pointed end up, and then lightly cover with soil.

Fertilization

Do not fertilize the soil prior to planting.

Maintenance and care

Keep free of weeds.

Shallots will rarely require treatment as long as you stick to a long crop rotation and plant only certified sets.
